PAST SIMPLE VS PAST CONTINUOUS

PAST SIMPLE

We use the past simple for an action which started and finished in the past, often with a time expression.

EG: I lived there for six months (= I no longer live there)

PAST CONTINUOUS

We use the past continuous for an action that was already happening at a particular time in the past.

EG: It was raining when we left the building

PAST SIMPLE OR PAST CONTINUOUS?

When one action "interrupts" another, we use the past continuous for the longer action and the past simple for the shorter "interrupting" action.

EG. He was going out to lunch when I saw him

USED TO + INFINITIVE / BE USED TO + ING

Used to + infinitive and Be used to + -ing are two completely different expressions which are easily confused.

USED TO + INFINTIVE

We use Used to + infinitive to talk about past habits and states which are now finished. Used to + infinitive can only be used to refer to the past. It cannot be used to talk about present habits or states.

EG. I used to smoke (but now I have stopped)

EG. I didn't use to like cheese (but now I love it!)

Notice that the verb "use" is considered a regular verb.

BE USED TO + -ING/NOUN PHRASE

If a person is used to something, or used to doing something, it is familiar; he or she has experienced it so much that it is no longer strange or new.

EG. I've lived in Central London for six years now, so I'm used to the noise.

EG. She is used to driving at night.

EG. It was a long time before she was completely used to working with old people.

Note that get, become and grow can also be used before used to + ing.

EG. I lived in France for six years, but I never got used to shaking hands with people all the time.

EG. Little by little, he became used to his new family.

NOTHING COMPARES TO YOU

Listen to this moving song.

It's been seven hours and fifteen days
Since you took your love away
I go out every night and sleep all day
Since you took your love away
Since you been gone I can do whatever I want
I can see whomever I choose
I can eat my dinner in a fancy restaurant
But nothing
I said nothing can take away these blues
`Cause nothing compares
Nothing compares to you

It's been so lonely without you here
Like a bird without a song
Nothing can stop these lonely tears from falling
Tell me baby where did I go wrong
I could put my arms around every boy I see
But they'd only remind me of you.
I went to the doctor n'guess what he told me
Guess what he told me
He said girl u better try to have fun
No matter what you'll do
But he's a fool
`Cause nothing compares
Nothing compares to you

all the flowers that you planted, mama
In the back yard
All died when you went away
I know that living with you baby was sometimes hard
But I'm willing to give it another try
Nothing compares
Nothing compares to you
Nothing compares
Nothing compares to you
Nothing compares
Nothing compares to you

SOMEONE LIKE YOU

Listen to this beautiful song by Adele.

I heard that you're settled down
That you found a girl and you're married now.
I heard that your dreams came true.
Guess she gave you things I didn't give to you.

Old friend, why are you so shy?
Ain't like you to hold back or hide from the light.

I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited
But I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it.
I had hoped you'd see my face and that you'd be reminded
That for me it isn't over.

Never mind, I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you too
Don't forget me, I beg
I remember you said,
"Sometimes it lasts in love but sometimes it hurts instead,
Sometimes it lasts in love but sometimes it hurts inste-ad, "

You know how the time flies
Only yesterday was the time of our lives
We were born and raised
In a summer haze
Bound by the surprise of our glory days

I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited
But I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it.
I'd hoped you'd see my face and that you'd be reminded
That for me it isn't over.

Never mind, I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you too
Don't forget me, I beg
I remember you said,
"Sometimes it lasts in love but sometimes it hurts inste-ad."

Nothing compares
No worries or cares
Regrets and mistakes
They are memories made.
Who would have known how bittersweet this would taste?

Never mind, I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you
Don't forget me, I beg
I remember you said,
"Sometimes it lasts in love but sometimes it hurts instead."

Never mind, I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you too
Don't forget me, I beg
I remember you said,
"Sometimes it lasts in love but sometimes it hurts instead,
Sometimes it lasts in love but sometimes it hurts inste-e-ad."

FOREIGN ACCENTS

Pronunciation is the most difficult aspect of a non-native language to learn. Most individuals who speak a non-native language fluently speak it with an accent of their native tongue.

A JOKE

One semester, an art student asked a friend if he could paint his portrait for a class assignment. The friend agreed, and the art student painted and submitted the portrait, only to receive a C minus. The art student approached the professor to ask why the grade was so poor. The teacher told him that the proportions in the painting were incorrect. "The head is too big," the professor explained. "The shoulders are too wide, and the feet are enormous." The next day, the art student brought his friend to see the professor. He took one look at the friend and said: "Okay, A minus".
